When presented with a meeting-free Friday afternoon we did what any normal person who has access to Irving Finkel would do - we asked him to teach us cuneiform. We're not really sure Nick learned. Lexical lists are compilations of cuneiform signs and word readings written on clay tablets throughout the late 4th millennium BCE up to the 1st century CE, scribal communities copied, modified, and passed on these cuneiform lexical lists and preserved them for as knowledge for a variety of purposes.

One person swept up in ‘Assyromania’ was a young banknote engraver called George Smith. He visited the British Museum in his lunch breaks, and studied every book available on the subject of Assyria. In the Museum gave him a dream job. He was asked to bring order to the tablet collection and to re-join the fragments of the tablets. The cuneiform texts of a large number of these commercial documents and letters have been published by Sidney Smith (Cuneiform Texts from Cappadocian Tablets, London, and following years), and in Part I he has given (pages 6 and 7) a long list of words used in connection with the weaving industry, which can be paralleled in Syriac by words.

Walker," Journal of Near Eastern Stud no. 1 (Jan., ): In , the Chicago Assyrian Dictionary translated the Old Babylonian term aširtu, which in the OB period corresponded to the Sumerian expression igi-kar 2, as “an offering of a pious gift to the gods”.In texts from the preceding Ur III period, however, the expression igi-kar 2 has usually been associated with the expression gurum 2 (written ) and translated “inspection”.
